Answer Engine Optimization: be the answer, not the tenth blue link

Buyers ask questions: how much does a roof replacement cost, how long does a furnace last, do I need a permit for a deck. We structure your pages so Google, voice assistants and AI Overviews pull your answer, with your name on it.

What is Answer Engine Optimization?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) structures web pages so search engines and assistants can lift a direct answer from them: a featured snippet, a People Also Ask result, a voice reply or a line in an AI Overview. The work is researching the questions buyers ask, answering each in 40 to 80 plain words near the top of the page, and marking it up with FAQ or HowTo schema so the answer is easy to extract.

Snippets and People Also Ask boxes are not won by stuffing a keyword; they are won by matching the question precisely and answering it more clearly than the current holder. For a service business that usually means cost, timeline, permit and comparison questions, which are also the questions that precede a phone call.

Who this is for

  • Contractors whose buyers Google "how much does" and "how long does" before they ever request a quote
  • Businesses that rank on page one but watch a competitor or a national site hold the snippet above them
  • Companies that want to show up in voice search and AI Overviews without a separate program
  • Teams with a blog nobody reads because the posts never answer a specific question

What you get

Named deliverables, so the monthly invoice always maps to work you can see.

Question research by service

The real questions buyers ask about each service, pulled from People Also Ask, Search Console queries, your sales calls and review text, grouped by intent and stage.

Answer blocks on priority pages

A direct 40 to 80 word answer under a question-led heading at the top of each target page, followed by the detail that earns trust.

Cost, timeline and comparison pages

The pages that win the most valuable answers: what something costs and why, how long it takes, and this versus that. Written with your real pricing factors, not national averages.

FAQ, HowTo and Service schema

Structured data that mirrors the on-page answers exactly, validated and monitored, so answer engines can parse what they are quoting.

Snippet-ready formatting

Tables for comparisons, numbered steps for processes, definition sentences for "what is" questions. Format matched to the type of answer Google shows for each query.

Answer feature tracking

Monthly report on which questions you own in snippets, People Also Ask and AI Overviews, which you lost, and what to update.

How the work runs

In order. Each step produces something you can review before the next one starts.

  1. 1

    Snippet audit

We check which of your target questions already show a snippet or People Also Ask box, who holds it, what format wins, and where your pages rank below it.

  2. 2

    Question map you approve

Questions prioritized by buying intent and winnability, assigned to existing pages or new ones. You confirm the pricing factors and claims we can make.

  3. 3

    Restructure existing pages

Answer blocks, headings and schema added to pages that already have authority. This is where early wins usually come from.

  4. 4

    New answer content

Cost guides, comparison pages and FAQ libraries published in batches, each reviewed by you before it goes live.

  5. 5

    Track and refresh

Monthly check of answer ownership; answers that slipped get rewritten against whatever replaced them.

Featured snippet, People Also Ask and AI Overview compared

Three different answer features, three different ways to win them. Most pages can target all three at once if they are structured for it.

How we measure it

  • Questions owned in featured snippets and People Also Ask, from a tracked list per service
  • Presence in AI Overviews for tracked queries, logged monthly with screenshots
  • Impressions and clicks on answer pages in Search Console, including zero-click impression share
  • Leads from answer pages: quote requests, calls and chats attributed in GA4

What this cannot do

  • Google decides whether a query shows a snippet or AI Overview at all; some questions never get one
  • Winning an answer can reduce clicks on informational questions, which is why we prioritize questions tied to buying
  • Answers must be true for your business; we will not publish a price or timeline you cannot stand behind
  • Snippet ownership changes often; keeping it requires ongoing refreshes, not a one-time rewrite

Answer Engine Optimization questions, answered

Direct answers first. If your question is not here, ask it on the call.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. AEO works on top of a page that already ranks reasonably well; Google rarely pulls a snippet from a page outside the top results. If your pages are not ranking yet, the SEO program comes first, with answer blocks built in from the start so you are not rewriting later.

Will being in the snippet reduce my traffic?

For purely informational questions, sometimes; the searcher gets the answer and moves on. For buying questions such as cost, timeline, or repair versus replace, the snippet is the first touch and your page gets the click when they want the quote. We prioritize questions where the answer leads to a call.

How is AEO different from GEO?

AEO targets answer features inside search: snippets, People Also Ask, voice, AI Overviews. GEO targets AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, where the output is a generated recommendation rather than a lifted passage. The content work overlaps heavily; the tracking and the entity work differ.

Do FAQ pages still work?

A page of random questions does not. A tightly scoped FAQ section on a service page, each question real and each answer direct, still earns People Also Ask placements and gives AI systems clean material. Google shows FAQ rich results less than it used to, but the schema still helps parsing.

Which questions should we target first?

Questions that sit right before a purchase and already show an answer feature: cost, timeline, permits, repair versus replace, and comparisons between material or system options. We rank them by buying intent, search volume and how beatable the current answer is.

How long until we see snippets?

On pages that already rank in the top results, restructured answers are often picked up within four to ten weeks. New pages take longer because they need to earn a ranking first. We report answer ownership monthly so you can see the trajectory.
