WordPress maintenance that keeps the site fast, safe and ranking
Updates tested before they go live, backups you can actually restore, security and uptime watched, speed and SEO health checked every month. The boring work that stops a good site from quietly decaying.
At a glance
- Who it is for
- Any business running WordPress that cannot afford a hacked, broken or slowing site
- Time to first signal
- Onboarding in the first week; monthly rhythm from then on
- Typical scope
- Updates, backups, security, uptime, performance and SEO health, small fixes, monthly report
What does WordPress maintenance include and do I need it?
WordPress maintenance covers the recurring work that keeps a site secure, fast and functional: core, theme and plugin updates tested on staging before going live, off-site backups with tested restores, security hardening and malware monitoring, uptime monitoring, database and performance housekeeping, and a monthly check that forms, speed and indexing still work. You need it because WordPress is actively maintained software; skipping updates invites breaches and breakage, and applying them blindly breaks layouts.
Most sites we take over have dozens of pending updates, a backup plugin that has not completed a backup in months, and a contact form that stopped sending at some point nobody noticed. Maintenance is cheaper than the emergency it prevents.
Who this is for
- Businesses whose site was built by an agency that no longer answers
- Companies that have been hacked, defaced or blacklisted once already
- Owners who see "updates available" in the dashboard and are afraid to click
- Sites we built or redesigned, after the 30-day support period ends
What you get
Named deliverables, so the monthly invoice always maps to work you can see.
Staged updates
Core, theme and plugin updates applied on a staging copy, visually checked, then deployed. Rolled back if anything breaks.
Backups and tested restores
Daily off-site backups with retention, plus a periodic restore test so the backup is proven to work before you need it.
Security hardening and monitoring
Login protection, file integrity and malware scanning, firewall rules, user audits and cleanup if something gets through.
Uptime and performance monitoring
Alerts when the site is down or slow, Core Web Vitals watched monthly, database and cache housekeeping.
Monthly health check
Forms submitted and received, tracking firing, no new crawl errors or indexing drops, licenses and SSL valid, broken links fixed.
Small fixes and a plain-English report
A block of time each month for content edits and small fixes, and a report of what was updated, blocked, fixed and recommended.
How the work runs
In order. Each step produces something you can review before the next one starts.
- 1
Onboarding audit
Access, hosting, plugin inventory, security status, backup status and a baseline of speed and Search Console health.
- 2
Stabilize
Overdue updates applied in batches on staging, abandoned plugins replaced, backups and monitoring installed, security hardened.
- 3
Monthly rhythm
Scheduled update windows, backup verification, health checks and your fix requests handled within the plan.
- 4
Quarterly review
Plugin list, hosting fit, speed trend and SEO health reviewed; recommendations made before problems become projects.
- 5
Incident response
If the site goes down or is compromised, we restore from backup, clean up, close the hole and tell you what happened.
Managed hosting, doing it yourself, or a maintenance plan
They cover different layers. Managed hosting looks after the server; a maintenance plan looks after your site.
| Dimension | Managed WordPress hosting | Do it yourself | Maintenance plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Updates | Core updates automatic; plugins and theme usually not | When you remember, with no staging | All updates, staged and checked |
| Backups | Usually included; restores vary | A plugin, if configured | Daily, off-site, restore-tested |
| Security | Server-level protection | Whatever plugin was installed | Hardening, monitoring and cleanup |
| Site-specific checks | None; the host does not know your forms | Only when something breaks | Forms, tracking, speed and SEO health monthly |
| Best for | A baseline every site should have | Hobby sites | Business sites that generate leads |
How we measure it
- Update currency: no pending core, theme or plugin updates older than the agreed window
- Backup success rate and last verified restore date
- Uptime and incident count, with time to resolution
- Core Web Vitals trend and Search Console health month over month
What this cannot do
- Maintenance reduces risk; it cannot make any site unhackable or guarantee zero downtime
- Plugins abandoned by their developers must be replaced, which sometimes means a small rebuild of that feature
- Shared or underpowered hosting limits what maintenance can do for speed and reliability
- Large design or feature changes are projects, not maintenance; we scope them separately
WordPress Maintenance questions, answered
Direct answers first. If your question is not here, ask it on the call.
Do I need WordPress maintenance if my host is managed?
Managed hosting covers the server and often core updates. It does not test your plugin updates against your theme, check that your forms still send, watch your Core Web Vitals or notice an indexing drop. Both layers matter; the host handles the machine, we handle your site.
What happens if my site gets hacked?
We take it offline if needed, restore the last clean backup, remove malware, close the vulnerability, rotate credentials, request blacklist removal and report what happened and what changed. Clients on a plan have the clean backup and monitoring in place that makes this hours instead of days.
How often do you update plugins?
On a scheduled cadence, typically weekly or biweekly, with security updates applied as soon as they are tested. Every update runs on staging first and is visually checked before deploy.
Can you take over a site you did not build?
Yes. We start with an onboarding audit, catch up the overdue updates carefully in batches, replace abandoned plugins, and establish backups and monitoring. If the site is too fragile to maintain safely, we tell you what it would take to fix.
Are content edits included?
A block of time each month is included for small changes: text updates, new photos, a new team member, a seasonal banner. Larger work such as new page templates or features is scoped separately so the plan stays predictable.
Can I cancel?
Yes, month to month. Everything is on hosting and accounts you own, so there is nothing to untangle. We hand over documentation of what is installed and why.
What we need to scope the project
- The goal of the site: more calls, quotes, bookings or orders
- New build or redesign, and the current platform if any
- Approximate page count and whether you sell online
- Examples of sites you like and your timeline
What happens next
- 1We review the details within one business day.
- 2A 20-minute scoping call to confirm pages, integrations and timeline.
- 3A fixed-price proposal with deliverables and a schedule you can hold us to.
