Why AI search matters now

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the work of making your business easy for AI assistants to understand, check and cite. The term comes from a peer-reviewed study by researchers at IIT Delhi and Princeton, presented at ACM KDD 2024 (Aggarwal et al.). Across a benchmark of 10,000 queries, adding citations, quotations and statistics to a page raised its visibility in AI answers by 30–40%, and by 115% for pages ranked fifth in normal search. Keyword stuffing did not help. In the authors' words, GEO "can boost visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses" (source).

What this means for you: a smaller tradie with clear, verifiable pages can be cited ahead of bigger competitors. What helps there is proof, not ad spend.

How local ranking works

Google says local results "are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity", and that "there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google" (Google Business Profile Help). Google also notes that "businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results" (source).
